Apple has stopped accepting card payments for subscriptions and app purchases in India. This means that users will no longer be able to use their debit or credit cards to buy apps from the App Store or subscribe to other Apple services using their Apple IDs. The change comes as a result of the new auto-debit rules imposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that came into effect last year.

You can no longer buy apps from the App Store, get subscriptions to iCloud+ and Apple Music, or purchase media content from Apple TV using your debit or credit cards. Users who already have a card added as a payment method to their accounts are also not able to make any fresh payments through the Apple ID.

Even if you attempt to make a payment through your card, Apple will throw an error message saying “This card type is no longer supported”. Notably, Apple users have taken to Twitter to complain about the elimination of credit and debit card options from the payment methods. However, Apple’s support page has listed three payment methods as an alternative to the previously used debit/credit card payments. These are:
- Net banking
- UPI
- Apple ID balance
The support page states that, “Regulatory requirements in India apply to the processing of recurring transactions. If you hold an Indian debit or credit card, and you have a subscription, these changes impact your transactions. Some transactions might be declined by banks and card issuers”.
Furthermore, the new auto-debit rules imposed by RBI also require customers to use two-factor authentication and to set up a fresh e-mandate for recurring payments. Besides, users will need to approve each payment of ₹5,000 or above. Other services impacted by the new RBI auto-debit rules are Google Play, YouTube, and Netflix.
