Apple Could Bring Ability To Accept NFC Mobile Payments Via iPhones

If a new report has to be believed, the brand might soon allow users to accept NFC mobile payments via iPhones. To date, small businesses that want to accept payments using an iPhone have to rely on third-party hardware from Square and other vendors. To make the whole process easier, Apple will reportedly integrate Square’s hardware into the iPhone for a more seamless payment network.

Apple To Integrate Square’s Hardware Into iPhones For Easier Mobile Payments Via NFC

If the report is to be believed, Apple would leverage Square’s hardware by integrating its tap-to-pay terminal technology into the iPhones using its built-in NFC chip. This would help small businesses to accept tap-to-pay payments without having to go through the hassle of connecting external hardware. The feature is also said to work with Apple Pay, allowing users to tap their iPhone onto the back of another iPhone in order to make a payment.

The upcoming feature will instead turn the iPhone into a payment terminal, letting users such as food trucks and hair stylists accept payments with the tap of a credit card or another iPhone onto the back of their device.

It’s unclear whether the payment acceptance option will be branded as part of Apple Pay, though the team working on the feature has been working within Apple’s payments division since being brought over from Mobeewave, the people said. It’s also not known if Apple intends to partner with an existing payment network for the feature or launch it alone.

So far, there’s been no official confirmation from Apple, but the report suggests that Apple could begin rolling out the feature via a future software update “in the coming months.” In all likelihood, the feature will be made available as soon as with iOS 15.4, which means that we don’t have to wait too long before the feature is released.
