Google Duo, the company’s consumer video chat service, will shortly merge with Google Meet, the company’s business video chat service. Google’s messaging apps have a turbulent history, and Allo, Duo’s chat-focused sibling, has already been phased out. Google is taking this action to help reduce the amount of conversation-related applications it has.
Google’s GM and VP, Javier Soltero, told TechCrunch that this change has been in the works for a long time. “We think it’s incredibly important and strategically critical for Google to be able to serve the entire video market, from consumer use to organisational and commercial use, with a common service platform and a product whose user experience is guided by the same sense of simplicity and intuitiveness”, he said.

This means you’ll be able to book meetings with other people, and all of Duo’s unique features will remain. In addition, the Duo app will be called Google Meet in the future. Existing users will be able to continue to use the greatest aspects of both apps without having to switch to something new.
This will be a significant shift, and competing apps and services such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams will face stiff competition.
Here’s a list of features that will now be available on this merged app:
- Customize virtual backgrounds in calls and meetings.
- Schedule meetings so everyone can join at a time that’s convenient for them.
- Use in-meeting chat for deeper engagement.
- Live share content to enable interaction with all participants on the call.
- Get real-time closed captions to better support accessibility and boost participation.
- Increase size of video calls from a current limit of 32 to 100 participants.
- Integrate with other tools, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messages and more.
