Apple iPhone 14 Pro Design, Hole + Pill Notch Revealed Via New Renders

Last Updated on March 24, 2022 by Anu Joy

Apple’s long-standing relationship with the awful display notch is finally going to end with this year’s 2022 Apple iPhone 14 series of smartphones. It is almost confirmed to get a dual hole-punch camera cutout that would house the selfie camera and other sensors. While we are yet to see it in the flesh, rumours are floating around regarding the display tech of next year’s Apple iPhone 15 Pro smartphones.

Apple is on a mission to reduce the clutter, which was evident when it first removed the headphone jack and then removed chargers from the iPhone retail packages. Now, according to a new report, Apple is planning to get rid of everything, on the display of course. There would be no annoying notches or camera cutouts on the display as the iPhone 15 Pro is expected to shift the camera hardware underneath the display.

Much like Android phones with under-display cameras, the iPhone 15 Pro will provide an enhanced video watching experience. Also, this move would excite gamers as it would provide more screen real estate and possibly a much more powerful Bionic processor.

The report states that Samsung Display and OTI Lumionics are working on a new generation of under-display camera tech. The new generation of organic cathode patterning material (CPM) comprises microscopic transparent windows to be opened in the cathode and OLED pixel layers. This can make the display go completely transparent to allow the under-display camera sensor and other sensors such as FaceID to function flawlessly.

This new tech will be seen first on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 in 2023. It will later be adopted by Apple for its iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which should go on sale in Q3, 2023. It remains to be seen whether the lower-end models such as the iPhone 15 mini or the iPhone 15 will get similar display tech. Chances are they might get similar hole punch cutout displays, which are set to debut with the iPhone 14 models.
