MG Motor has been one of the forerunners in the Indian EV space. The brand has a single EV model in the country, with another one on the way. It is now being rumoured that the company is working on a mini electric vehicle for the Indian market. This EV is set to be a four-seater model and could be smaller than even the Maruti Alto in overall dimensions.
MG Motors is owned by the Chinese SIAC Motor Group, which has been making mini EVs for the Chinese market for a while now. The brand has the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, which has seen 5,00,000 units shipped just in the year 2020. This makes it one of the best-selling EV models in the country. Seeing that growth, MG also plans to launch something for India, which has the potential to become the next big EV market.

The car has been codenamed E230. With the E230, MG plans to cut into the global mini EV market. Given how congested most of these urban markets are, E230 will be aimed squarely at the urban buyer. We do not have any concrete word on the battery size or the pricing.
Given the price of their EV hatchback, the MG ZS EV, we can safely assume that this new mini EV will be priced in tens of lakhs. The average cost of a four-seater internal combustion engine (ICE) option in the country starts at ₹4 lakhs. The MG E230 is expected to have a range of around 150km.
The mini EV is slated to be based on the Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform, which is already in use on the Baojun E100, E200, E300, and E300 Plus that are being sold in China. It will be interesting to see how an EV with a similar footprint but twice the cost penetrates the market.
