Last week saw a slew of announcements from various companies pertaining to new tech gadgets, courtesy MWC 2022. However, Nokia barely made a splash at the event by sticking to low-end smartphones. HMD Global, the current manufacturer of Nokia phones, made it clear to Android Authority that it is no longer interested in making flagship phones.

Ferguson added that the company doesn’t “want to get involved in a massive spec war with other players” and would rather “stand for something very different”.
HMD’s statements didn’t really come as a surprise. For the past few years, Nokia’s focus has been on mid-range and budget smartphones. However, it did try to enter the high-end flagship segment with the Nokia 9 Pureview, back in 2019, which saw a lackluster performance. Sticking with budget devices appears to have turned out in HMD’s favour, with the last quarter of 2021 being the company’s most profitable quarter.
HMD Focusing On Feature Phones And Budget Smartphones
HMD says that its goal is to make good feature phones, as well as entry-level and mid-range smartphones. It wants to be known for hardware that is durable and long lasting, supplemented with a battery life that will last for day. To top it all off, the company wants to market it at an affordable price. The phone manufacturer also wants to reach the top of the US prepaid smartphone market by the end of this year. With these goals, Ferguson says it hopes to “earn [its] spurs and then expand in a way that supports the core business”.
