OnePlus announced at the MWC event that they have abandoned plans for a unified operating system. The brand, after their merger with OPPO last year, had announced that they would be merging both OxygenOS and ColorOS to form a single unified OS that was slated to run on OPPO and OnePlus smartphones.
This move comes after the backlash that came instantly after the Unified OS announcement. At the core, both OnePlus and OPPO phones will use the same codebase, but the UI and features on top will be different. OnePlus will stick with its clean and feature-rich OxygenOS, which will gain the Material You element in the upcoming builds. The brand also announced that the long-awaited OnePlus 10 Pro will launch globally by the end of March and will come with OxygenOS 12.1 out of the box.

The brand clearly knows that OxygenOS has been a key factor in their growth over the years, and diluting that could have a catastrophic effect. But at the same time, OnePlus clarified that both OxygenOS and ColorOS will continue to be developed on the same codebase—to allow for faster updates and better build quality—but OxygenOS and ColorOS will remain independent brand properties.
