Oppo has revealed the first look of its new smartphone that sports a retractable camera. The Chinese tech company took to Twitter to show off its features, a week before its Inno Day Event. It highlighted the phone’s retractable camera feature and showed the phone being dropped, causing the camera to automatically retract.
Back in 2018, it was revealed that Oppo has been working on smartphones that could sense falls prior to impact and automatically retract the display within the chassis to survive the fall. However, it looks like the company is testing the waters by adding the feature to its camera first. Perhaps it could add retractability to other components in future iterations.

Expect the new phone to be showcased in Oppo’s annual tech event, the Inno Day 2021. Check out the video posted by Oppo on Twitter:
Oppo likely took a jab at pop-up cameras on other smartphones by claiming that their “self-developed” retractable camera isn’t annoying like other pop-ups. The Twitter video shows the camera protruding out and then going back in. It isn’t a pop-up camera like its cousin, the OnePlus, used to sport.
The video further goes on to show the camera being sprayed with water, indicating that the new smartphone will be water resistant. It also shows the phone being dropped, causing the camera to retract, to demonstrate its durability. Close-up shots of the phone reveal that the size of the camera sensor is 1/1.56-inches. It is paired with a lens that has an aperture of f/2.4 and 50mm focal length. However, it isn’t clear whether the camera will be capable of optical zoom.
You can tune in to the company’s Inno World Event, which will be held on December 14 to find out more.
