Google, alongside the ‘Pixel Phone Feature Drop’, announced a firmware update for its entry-level TWS (Truly Wireless) earphones, the Pixel Buds A-Series. This update will add a bass slider, a loudness compensation toggle, improved bass and treble, improved connectivity, and more.
The bass slider feature can be accessed via the Pixel Buds companion app. It will now allow you to play with four steps of bass level adjustability. It promises to deliver twice the bass range when compared to the earlier ‘Bass Boost’ feature. Some tracks tend to deliver very high bass on the stock setting, you can now set the bass slider to -1 to reduce the effect. The update adds a new Loudness compensation toggle in the Sound settings. You can set it to the desired value to deliver higher bass and treble at lower volumes.

Say, for instance, your Pixel Buds were connected to your smartphone but is currently unavailable. It will then search for the device which was paired prior to your current smartphone and initiate connection with the older device automatically. The update also brings connectivity related bugs fixes and stability improvements.
The Google Pixel Buds A-Series firmware update is rolling out now but will be pushed in batches depending on your region. Pixel smartphone users can simply pair with their Pixel Buds to install the update automatically. Other Android users above Android 6.0 will need to have the Pixel Bud app installed and automatic updates enabled. Feeling adventurous enough to update it manually? Have a look at the detailed update procedure below.
How To Manually Update Google Pixel Buds A Series
- Place your earbuds securely into their open case.
- On a Pixel phone with Android 10+: Go to Settings > Connected devices > Pixel Bud’s settings
On other Android devices: Open the Google Pixel Buds app - Scroll down and select More settings > Firmware update.
- Tap Update available.
- Follow the on screen instructions. This will take about 15 minutes.
- Updates will only be installed if your earbuds and charging case have sufficient charge. If they’re running low on power, plug them in.
- It may take multiple attempts for the update to complete. For example, taking your earbuds out of the charging case while it’s being installed may pause the update. However, if any part of the process is interrupted, don’t worry—it will resume at the next opportunity.
- To see whether an update was successfully installed, go to Settings > More settings > Firmware update. If there’s no mention of an available update, it means that you have the most recent firmware.
