Qualcomm has announced its Snapdragon event in China on May 20, 2022. We had earlier reported that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ could launch in May 2022, and it is likely that Qualcomm will introduce it at this event. Industry pundits believe that Qualcomm may also launch the upper-midrange Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset.
Let’s have a look at what these processors will bring to the table.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+: Highlights
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ will be a successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, which was launched at the end of 2021. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor was built on Samsung’s 4nm fabrication process. The latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ flagship chipset will be built on the TSMC’s 4nm fabrication process.
The new chipset will retain the same Cortex X2 prime core, three Cortex A710 Performance cores, and four Cortex A510 efficiency cores. Also, it will retain the Adreno 730 GPU as before. However, expect the CPU and GPU to come with boosted frequencies. Qualcomm expects the chipset to perform at its full potential with the switch to TSMC. Also, the energy efficiency of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ is expected to be better.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1: Highlights
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will adopt Qualcomm’s new naming scheme and is expected to be an upgrade to the Snapdragon 778G+ in the market. The Snapdragon 778G and 778G+ offer excellent performance in mid-range and upper mid-range devices. They offered a very good gaming experience for those on a budget.
According to rumours, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC (system on chip) will use ARM’s latest v9 cores. It will sport four A710 cores clocked at 2.36Ghz and four A510 cores clocked at 1.8Ghz. It will get the Adreno 662 GPU, which should perform even better than the Adreno 660 of the Snapdragon 888. Some reports say that it will be built on Samsung’s 4nm process, while others suggest it will utilise TSMC’s 5nm node. It is still unclear at this point, but expect more information about these new chipsets to be revealed closer to the launch.
The upcoming Oppo Reno 8 smartphone is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chipset could debut in the Motorola Frontier/Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.
