Reliance Jio’s Estonia arm and the University of Oulu have partnered for the development of 6G technologies. Back in 2018, Jio had set up the Jio Estonia OU to work on developing 6G technology.
Reliance Jio’s Jio Platforms was earlier established as a development program for 5G. Its latest collaboration aims to build on its 5G capabilities. Aayush Bhatnagar, Senior Vice President of Jio Platforms added that “Early investments in 6G research and capabilities with the University of Oulu can complement Jio Lab’s capabilities in 5G and bring 6G to life.”
As the leader of the world’s first major 6G research program, the University of Oulu focuses on wireless communications leading to 6G technologies. We are looking forward to collaborating with Jio Estonia and the entire Reliance Group on targeted research initiatives that will enable future wireless end-to-end solutions for a wide range of end-user requirements.

What is 6G?
The co-existence of 5G and 6G, with unique features such as cell-free MIMO, and higher capacities via Terahertz frequencies, is said to cover a wide range of use cases. It is reported to work on 6G-enabled products in the defence and automotive sectors. Additionally, it will aid in consumer goods as well as smart devices. The partnership will also draw from both, the manufacturing industry as well as academia, to give a boost to entrepreneurship in the fields of “Aerial and Space communication, Holographic Beamforming, 3D Connected Intelligence in Cybersecurity, Microelectronics and Photonics”.
At the beginning of the year, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) formed a technology Innovation Group (TIG) to work on 6G technology, even as 5G services in India are yet to be rolled out. It is reported that India’s 5G spectrum auction will likely take place sometime this year, which could result in the rollout of 5G services to spill into next year.
