Samsung has unveiled its third-generation Galaxy Z Fold series smartphone: Galaxy Z Fold 3. It succeeds the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and comes with improved hardware and software. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 features a stronger body, a water-resistant design, a faster cover display, a faster processor, and improved software. It is also the world’s first foldable smartphone with an under-display camera and compatibility with a stylus (S Pen). It features two 120Hz Super AMOLED displays, a Snapdragon 888 processor, a 12MP triple-camera setup, a 10MP selfie camera, and a 4MP under-display camera.
During the Galaxy Unpacked August 2021 event, Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Watch 4, Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, and the Galaxy Buds 2.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 Specifications, Features
This year, Samsung has focussed a lot on improving the durability of its foldable smartphones rather than improving the internal specifications or cameras. The company claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s Armor Aluminium body is tougher and the smartphone features an IPX8 rating for water resistance. The smartphone’s foldable display is tougher, too, and it is now compatible with the S Pen. In fact, Samsung has made two special S Pen models for the Galaxy Z Fold 3: S Pen Fold Edition and S Pen Pro. However, none of them come bundled with the device. You will have to spend additional money to buy them as accessories and also buy special cases to store them.
Coming back to the specifications of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the new foldable smartphone features a 6.2-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O cover display with HD+ resolution (2,268 x 832 pixels). It also has a 7.6-inch foldable AMOLED Infinity Flex Display with Full HD+ resolution (2,208 x 1,768 pixels) lacks any notch or punch hole. Both screens feature HDR10+ certification. The cover display is protected using Gorilla Glass Victus, while the foldable display is protected using UTG (Ultra Thin Glass). The back of the phone is protected using Gorilla Glass Victus as well.
Samsung has placed a 4MP under-display camera below the foldable display. At the front, there is a 10MP selfie camera with 4K 60fps video recording. At the rear, the smartphone has a triple-camera setup that has a 12MP primary camera with Dual-Pixel PDAF and OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom and OIS. All the rear-facing cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 can record 4K 60fps videos.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 runs Android 11 with One UI 3.1.1. Samsung has made a lot of improvements in the software and the stock apps to let them take full advantage of the larger foldable screen. The smartphone is equipped with the 5nm Snapdragon 888 processor, 12GB RAM, and 256GB/512GB UFS 3.1 internal storage. The smartphone also features stereo speakers and Dolby Atmos audio. Other features include Samsung DeX, Samsung Pay, and Secure Folder.
Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Z Fold 3 with the latest connectivity features, including 5G, 4G LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.0, UWB (Ultra Wideband), NFC, and a USB Type-C port. The phone has a side-mounted fingerprint reader. It is powered by a 4,400mAh battery that supports 25W fast charging, 15W fast wireless charging, and 4.5W reverse wireless charging.
Samsung has collaborated with high-fashion designer Thom Browne to make the Galaxy Z Fold 3 Thom Browne Edition. It has the iconic three-coloured stripe design that we’ve come to know from Thom Browne. In fact, Samsung has also created Galaxy Z Flip 3 Thom Browne Edition, Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Thom Browne Edition, S Pen Thom Browne Edition, and the Galaxy Buds 2 Thom Browne Edition. All these special-edition devices have a three-coloured stripe design.
