Two of the biggest giants in their respective industries, Sony and Honda have announced that they will be coming together to make Electric Vehicles. Under this joint initiative, both brands will be creating a new entity that will both design and sell electric vehicles. The venture hasn’t been finalised just yet, but the two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding that states their intent. This new Joint Venture (JV) is expected to be set up this year with the very first EV rolling out sometime in 2025.
Under this, Honda will manufacture the very first model, with the new company handling the vehicle’s design, development, and sales, and Sony is set to develop a mobility service platform. In this JV, Honda will bring their decades of car-making and marketing experience to the table, while Sony will bring their capabilities in image sensors, telecommunications, and entertainment.

Moreover, Sony announced their newest EV prototype at CES 2022.
Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said, “Through this alliance with Honda, which has accumulated extensive global experience and achievements in the automobile industry over many years and continues to make revolutionary advancements in this field, we intend to build on our vision to ‘make the mobility space an emotional one,’ and contribute to the evolution of mobility centred around safety, entertainment and adaptability”.
Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe, CEO of Honda added that “The New Company will aim to stand at the forefront of innovation, evolution, and expansion of mobility around the world, by taking a broad and ambitious approach to creating value that exceeds the expectations and imagination of customers. We will do so by leveraging Honda’s cutting-edge technology and know-how in relation to the environment and safety while aligning the technological assets of both companies”.
