The world’s first USB Type-C cable with the capability of delivering 240W power output has arrived. According to a report, a Netherlands-based company, Club 3D, has launched three cables supporting 240W power. Two of these cables support power, data, and video transmission, whereas one is a power specific cable with a slow USB 2.0 data support. However, these cables are not listed on the brand’s website, and they aren’t available with the retailers either.
Currently, there are no devices that require 240W of USB Type-C power. Also, USB Type-C chargers aren’t available in the market yet. At the moment, even Club 3D itself doesn’t have a charger beyond 132W. These cables are meant to be future-ready to support a multitude of devices that can take USB Type-C charging. It won’t be long before smartphones from OnePlus and Realme start offering 150W chargers.
Club 3D USB Type-C Cable: Specifications
The Club 3D CAC-1573 cable enables 240W power and a 480Mbps data transfer. The Club 3D CAC-1575 cable comes with a USB4 Gen2x2 data transfer of 20Gbps, 240W Power Delivery, and 4K 60Hz video support. The Club 3D CAC-1576 is the top dog with a USB4 Gen3x2 data transfer of 40Gbps, 240W Power Delivery, and 8K 60Hz video support.
Back in 2021, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) introduced the USB PD (Power Delivery) 3.1 specification. This allows power delivery up to 240W over a USB Type-C cable and connectors. Earlier, it was limited to 100W, which wouldn’t have sufficed in this day and age. The USB-IF also implemented new logos for USB Type-C cables, chargers, packaging, and marketing materials that will indicate the data rate in Gbps and charging speeds in Watts. These labels would allow the buyers to opt for the right cables.
