After the dismal performance and an early exit from the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, India’s ranking in the format took a heavy beating. BCCI resorted to damage control by inviting New Zealand to play a three-match T20 series against India, right after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. India managed to win the series handsomely by 3-0 under the newly appointed captain, Rohit Sharma.
India later managed to seal the T20 series 3-0 against the in-transition Windies team at home. These back-to-back T20 series catapulted India to the topmost position in the ICC rankings. Now, the BCCI will be hosting a three-match T20 series and a two-match against Sri Lanka. India will be hoping to cement its position as the number one ranked team in the world in the T20s by winning this series comprehensively.
India’s T20I Squad
Here’s India’s T20I squad—Rohit Sharma (C), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Bumrah (VC), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Sanju Samson (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav, and Avesh Khan.
The star performer in the recently concluded India vs West Indies T20 series, Suryakumar Yadav a.k.a. SKY suffered a hairline fracture in the third and final T20I against the West Indies in Kolkata. Deepak Chahar too pulled out midway in an over and is said to have sustained a right quadriceps injury. Both the players have been ruled out of this series and this might even affect their participation in the upcoming IPL season.
Thankfully, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant have been rested for this series. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja returns to the team after a long time and so will ace paceman Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah will be the deputy to captain Rohit Sharma for this series. Sanju Samson has been given an opportunity to prove himself as he is being considered to play in the 2022 T20 World Cup later this year, according to selectors.
