Recently, Samsung was in the news after reports emerged that the Korean electronics giant was forcibly throttling a number of apps, including games. This came after OnePlus was caught in a similar situation with their flagship smartphones. It appears that Xiaomi is the latest smartphone maker to join the performance throttling club.
The popular benchmarking app, Geekbench’s co-founder John Poole, claimed on Twitter that Xiaomi is also throttling performance based on app names. Poole found that disguising the Geekbench benchmarking app as the popular Fortnite game resulted in single-core performance scores dropping by a massive 30 percent, while in the same test, multi-core scores dropped by 15 percent. He said that similar results were seen when Geekbench was disguised as Genshin Impact, another popular game on Android.

Poole found this while benchmarking the Xiaomi 11, the company’s last-generation flagship model. This is not the first time Xiaomi has been caught throttling performance and not reporting it in the public domain. Anandtech also found something similar during their testing of the Xiaomi 11T Pro sometime last year.
We know that it is quite common for smartphone brands to throttle some demanding apps on smartphones now and then, but what’s disappointing is the lack of transparency here. In previous instances, both OnePlus and Samsung had publicly accepted this issue and had released a fix for it. However, Xiaomi has not yet acknowledged this. We are still waiting for the brand to release a public statement.
