Amazon has shared its plans to start drone deliveries for customers later this year. The e-commerce giant will reportedly debut the flying delivery service in a California town. According to the company, Amazon customers residing in the Northern California town of Lockeford will be able to sign up for free deliveries via “Prime Air” drones.
Amazon To Launch Flying Delivery Service: Here’s How It Will Work
Elaborating on the drone delivery service, the company says that the “Air eligible” items ordered on different retailer websites will be packed into drones that will fly to the delivery addresses. The drones will drop packages outside the designated places from safe heights and then fly away.

According to Amazon, the drones are designed to carry loads as heavy as 2.2 kilograms in packages about the size of a large shoe box. The items approved for drone delivery will include household products, beauty items, office supplies, and tech gear.
In order to ensure a safe landing of the delivery packages, the e-commerce platform claims to have employed a sophisticated system to enable its drones to detect and avoid aircraft, people, pets, and other obstacles. Further, the company will use feedback from the operations in California to expand the service further and introduce new improvements.
So far, there’s no word as to what expansion plans Amazon has for its flying delivery service. It will be interesting to see whether the e-commerce giant would be interested in launching the service in a market such as India. That said, we will have to wait it out for a while to know more about the service.
