Apple iOS 16 Update Could Bring Massive Update To Notifications System

iOS 16 (codenamed Sydney) will be previewed at WWDC, which will be held from June 6 through 10 this year. Although the upcoming version of iOS will not see a major design revamp, it is said to offer major upgrades to the notifications system. Additionally, watchOS 9 will reportedly feature new health-tracking features.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted in his latest Power On newsletter that he does not expect an “end-to-end redesign of iOS’s interface” with iOS 16. On the other hand, the Apple analyst adds that the iPadOS multitasking interface could get a makeover.

On the iOS side, I’m looking for some fairly significant enhancements across the board, including an update to notifications and new health-tracking features. I’m not expecting an end-to-end redesign of iOS’s interface, even though it hasn’t changed much since iOS 7 nearly a decade ago. But there might be a new iPadOS multitasking interface.

Besides iOS 16, Apple will preview iPadOS 16, macOS 13, watchOS 9, and tvOS 16 during WWDC this year. After the preview, developers will start testing the latest Apple operating systems. Apple will then roll it out to public beta testers over the summer. After beta testing completes in the fall, iOS 16 will roll out to the public, along with the launch of the new iPhones.

Gurman speculated in his latest newsletter that watchOS 9 could come with “major upgrades to activity and health tracking”. He added that the Cupertino-based company is working on this year’s new MacBook Air with an updated design, a 13-inch MacBook Pro, a 24-inch iMac, and a new Mac mini.

The analyst also had some interesting predictions about Apple’s mixed reality headset. He noted that it could likely launch “during the iOS 16 cycle, which kicks off in June and will last until iOS 17 comes in the fall of 2023”. But Apple could also preview some of its virtual reality software before that, offering a look at the headset’s reality operating system (rOS).
