Apple is ready with the successor to the M1 series of chips. The upcoming M2 lineup of processors will be powering the new MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro laptops in Apple’s stable. Back in 2020, Apple broke its 15-year partnership with Intel and announced that it would be replacing its entire lineup with its own developed silicon. The current lineup of MacBooks run on the Apple M1 chip, with the M1 Ultra being the last chip in the lineup. Going forward, the upcoming 2022 models will be powered by the new Apple M2 silicon.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his latest issue of Power On, states that Apple may introduce five variants of the M2 Apple Silicon. The entry-level M2 chip will come with 8 CPU cores + 10 GPU cores. The M2 Pro will comprise 12 CPU cores + 16 GPU cores. The M2 Max will pack in 12 CPU cores + 32 GPU cores. The M2 Ultra will come with 24 CPU cores + 48/64 GPU cores and the top-spec M2 Extreme will boast of a mind-boggling 48 CPU cores + 96/128 GPU cores.
MacBook Air
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that the MacBook Air will retain the M1 chip for 2022. However, Mark Gurman begs to differ, stating that the Apple MacBook Air will be powered by the latest M2 chip. Also, according to Gurman, it will get a complete design overhaul. Performance-wise, the M2 chip is expected to be better than the current entry-level Apple M1 chip, but it won’t be able to match the power of the M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra chips.
13-Inch MacBook Pro
Rumours and speculations have been floating around for a while about the upcoming 2022 13-inch MacBook Pro. This will be an entry-level laptop in the MacBook Pro series, and Apple might just name it the MacBook to differentiate it from the higher variants. According to Gurman, it will be powered by the entry-level M2 chip, while the higher 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro will get the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips respectively.
The new laptops with M2 silicon are expected to be showcased at Apple’s WWDC 2022 (Worldwide Developer’s Conference), which will be held in June. Also, the Apple Mac mini PC with the new M2 and M2 Pro chips are expected to make an appearance at the event.
