At the time of its release, Apple’s newest piece of technology, the Studio Display, had a strange issue with a blurry webcam. This was mentioned in the majority of the reviews, and Apple pledged to deliver a remedy as soon as possible.
The iPhone maker’s representative had previously informed The Verge that “an update to the Studio Display firmware is now available with today’s beta release of macOS Monterey 12.4. This beta update has refinements to the Studio Display camera tuning, including improved noise reduction, contrast, and framing”.
The beta is now only available to developers, but it should be available for public download within the next few hours. While the Studio Display included some unusual monitor hardware, the problem was peculiar because Apple’s webcam on the Studio Display is the same device that the company has been utilising on older versions of iPhones. The iPhone 11 uses the same 12-megapixel sensor, f/2.4 lens, and A13 chip as the Studio Display. We don’t know what triggered this problem in the first place.
What’s upsetting is that Apple offered a possible remedy for this blurry webcam in a macOS beta rather than a stable upgrade. So, if you own an Apple Studio Display, the only way to enjoy a grain-free webcam experience is to sign up for the macOS beta. One probable explanation for this decision is that Apple is not taking any chances and wants to thoroughly test the webcam performance with this update before releasing the patch in the next stable macOS release.
If you have already installed the beta macOS, go to System Preferences > Software Update to update your display. After installing Studio Display Firmware Version 15.5 (Build 19F5062g), you should observe the effects of Apple’s changes.
