As per the latest update available on the 5G rollout in the country, it is expected to happen by August 15—Independence Day. Keeping pace with the 5G launch timeline, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is all set to launch the commercial 4G network alongside the 5G network in Non-Standalone (NSA) mode around the same time this year.

BSNL To Launch 4G With 5G NSA Network By August
While speaking in a panel discussion at the 5G Congress 2022, Rajkumar Upadhyay, Executive Director & Chairman of Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) said that 5G in Non-standalone mode will be launched by August 2022 to support 4G plus 5G network services on the network platform.
While we were doing our proof of concept (PoC), we were also working on 5G. As far as the 5G NSA is concerned, we will launch the BSNL network by August 2022. So, they can really start service, it will be 4G plus 5G.

He further added that the 5G NSA core would be ready for deployment by Independence Day this year. Upadhyay was speaking in a panel discussion on India’s Atmanirbhar (self-reliance) roadmap at the 5G Congress 2022, organised by ETTelecom. He also confirmed the successful completion of the BSNL’s 4G network during the same discussion session.

According to the official statement, BSNL will soon launch 4G after commercial agreements have been put in place. A formal order is awaited by the company, after which the 4G service shall begin.

Reportedly, the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) backed consortium is shortlisted to conduct field trials in Ambala and Chandigarh to demonstrate the 5G network deployed by the telecom operator. TCS took over after the withdrawal of rival consortiums led by L&T, HFCL, and Tech Mahindra.
BSNL 5G SA Network Deployment
Speaking on BSNL’s 5G SA (Standalone) network deployment, the C-DoT official said that the service can be expected to begin by Q3 of 2023.
We look forward to deploying 5G NSA by August and 5G SA by next year.

Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) is working closely with C-DoT on various products including the core network which is being indigenously developed for BSNL. The research organization has expressed willingness to provide source code to vendors to facilitate the development of cheaper indigenous products.
