Google is working on an entry-level Chromecast with Google TV. The streaming dongle is said to only support 60FPS HD output with a maximum resolution of 1080p, whereas the 2020 version offered 4K resolution. This device is most likely targeted towards people with older TV sets. Internally code-named “Boreal”, the Chromecast dongle could reach the markets as “Chromecast HD with Google TV”, however, it could change before release. A notable feature of this device would be the ability to support decoding of the AV1 video codec. It is to be noted that Google’s latest streaming dongle available in the markets—the Chromecast with Google TV doesn’t support AV1 hardware decoding yet. The upcoming Chromecast HD with Google TV will purportedly feature 2GB of RAM, besides support for 1080p streaming with a maximum 60fps frame rate.

When it comes to pricing, the upcoming Chromecast HD with Google TV may reportedly retail for less than $49.99 (around ₹3,700). The entry-level streaming dongle could possibly be marketed towards developing markets such as India, where Android TV rules the roost when it comes to smart TVs. Protocol notes that Google may launch the device in North America, and could eventually launch it in other markets worldwide. It’s still unclear when Google will announce its new Chromecast HD streaming device.
