Last week, Instagram rolled out new features to help creators earn a regular income through the platform. Now, the company has announced a nifty way for small businesses to get paid—via Instagram Direct Messages (DMs). This will also be a convenient feature for customers, as they can make enquiries, select products, and make payments in the same chat thread.
Meta, Instagram’s parent company, announced that you will be able to buy products from small businesses through DMs. This means that you can directly chat with qualified merchants about the product. The seller will be able to send you payment requests within the same chat. You can then make the payment and track your order, all in the same thread.

For instance, if you come across a cute pair of shoes while scrolling through Instagram, you can head over to the business’ page and shoot them a DM. You can even explore customisation options such as getting your name embossed on the shoes. Finally, you can buy the shoes buy completing the payment request. The company adds that Meta Pay can be used to make the purchase.
Meta assures that the payments are processed securely and your purchases are protected. You can expect more improvements in the future as the company promises, “As we look toward the next chapter of the internet and the metaverse, we’re looking forward to giving people more access to tools like payments in chat that will make people’s lives easier.”

With these new features, Instagram has evolved into a one-stop-shop for your shopping needs. It’s no longer just an app that leaves you green with envy over your friend’s cool new kicks; now, you can buy them for yourself and perpetuate the wave of jealousy. The social media platform introduced the shopping feature on the app back in 2020. Recently, Instagram announced subscriber-exclusive reels and posts—a new means for content creators on the app to generate a regular income.
