Intel and MediaTek have announced that the two companies have joined hands to manufacture chips using Intel Foundry Services (IFS). MediaTek aims to build a more resilient supply chain globally, especially in the United States and Europe. The company plans to leverage Intel’s process technologies to manufacture a variety of processors.
Intel established IFS last year to help meet the increasing demand for semiconductor chips. Intel states, “IFS is differentiated from other foundry offerings with a combination of leading-edge process and packaging technology, a world-class IP portfolio, and committed capacity in the United States and Europe.” Furthermore, Intel is looking to increase production at the existing sites. The company is also working on expanding its manufacturing capacity, and has its eyes on greenfield sites in Ohio and Germany.

We have an existing 5G data card business partnership with Intel, and now extend our relationship to manufacturing smart edge devices through Intel Foundry Services. With its commitment to major capacity expansions, IFS provides value to MediaTek as we seek to create a more diversified supply chain. We look forward to building a long-term partnership to serve the fast-growing demand for our products from customers across the globe.”
MediaTek will be utilising Intel’s process technologies to produce various processors which will be used in a wide range of smart edge devices. IFS promises technologies for high performance, low power and always-on connectivity. The foundry’s offerings span from production-proven three-dimensional FinFET transistors to next-generation breakthroughs.
IFS President Randhir Thakur said of the partnership, “As one of the world’s leading fabless chip designers powering more than 2 billion devices a year, MediaTek is a terrific partner for IFS as we enter our next phase of growth.” Thakur added, “We have the right combination of advanced process technology and geographically diverse capacity to help MediaTek deliver the next billion connected devices across a range of applications.”
MediaTek already has a 5G data card business partnership with Intel. And with the latest partnership with IFS, its joint venture expands to include the production of smart edge devices as well.
