When it comes to transparent displays, LG Display has been in the game since 2014, with its first transparent and flexible OLED panels. It continued to dabble with transparent screens with an experimental prototype of a hidden transparent OLED TV set. Today, LG Display unveiled four new concepts that make use of its transparent panel solutions, which are set to be unveiled at CES 2022 in January. These concepts are: the OLED Shelf, Shopping Managing Showcase, Show Window, and Smart Window.

LG Display says that this home screen concept for interiors will merge with the existing living room wall for a “luxurious interior effect”. The screen will not be limited to watching videos, but will also double as an art gallery, wherein the piece of art could be displayed just like a painting that’s blending into the wall behind it.
You could even place an actual painting behind the screen, to view when the display is switched off. LG Display has also conceptualised a motorized sheet of opaque material to roll down like a projector screen to make images look less ghostly.
LG Display Shopping Managing Showcase Concept
The Shopping Managing Showcase is intended to be used in “luxurious” department stores, according to LG Display. It uses a transparent OLED display fitted inside a wooden case to show off products that are available for purchase. Store owners could even highlight their products by adding an overlay to the items behind the display.
LG Display Show Window Concept
This concept is similar to that of the Shopping Managing Showcase, albeit on a larger scale. It employs four 55-inch transparent OLED displays to create a bigger shopping window. Stores could display advertisements, add digital text, and even include personalized messages for shoppers. LG Display has said that versions of this can be found at the Smithsonian art exhibits as well as London’s art scene.
LG Display Smart Window Concept
The Smart Window Concept is meant to create a futuristic-looking office environment. The transparent OLED screen can be used for office presentations as well as video calls. However, LG Display didn’t furnish any images for this use case.
It is to be noted that these are concepts which may not see the light of day. However, LG Display spokesperson Jean Lee told The Verge, “If any of our customers want, we can provide [the OLED Shelf]”. Lee says that the displays are based on 55-inch 1080p transparent OLED panels with 40 percent transparency, which is on the company’s eighth gen display manufacturing process.
