Last week, Apple unveiled its Mac Studio, which appears to be based on the Mac mini. But that doesn’t signal the demise of the Mac mini. New rumours suggest that the iPhone maker is working on a Mac mini with an M2 chip as well as an M2 Pro chip.
Apple reportedly wanted to launch high-end versions of the current Mac mini with M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, but the firm decided to go with the Mac Studio instead. But new rumours have been floating about, suggesting that Apple hasn’t forgotten the Mac mini just yet.

Internally known as “Staten”, the M2 chip will be the successor of Apple’s M1 chip which was launched back in 2020. Apple’s M2 processor is touted as an entry-level chip for Macs and iPads.
The M2 is based on the latest A15 bionic chipset. Moreover, it will have an eight-core CPU with four performance cores (codenamed “Avalanche”) and four efficiency cores (internal name “Blizzard”). Its predecessor M1 also had the same number of CPU cores. However, the M2 will see a slight performance boost with a 10-core GPU.
A new Mac mini (codenamed J474) that will be powered by the M2 Pro chip is also in the works. The M2 Pro will have a 12-core CPU, with eight performance cores and four efficiency cores. In comparison, the current M1 Pro has a 10-core CPU.
Rumours suggest that the Mac mini with M2 and M2 Pro chips could likely be unveiled in June at WWDC 2022.
