Apple reportedly shipped nearly one million iPhones that were manufactured in India in the first quarter of 2022. This implies that shipments rose by a whopping 50 per cent YoY.
According to data gathered by market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR), iPhones in India registered a growth of 22 per cent in the first quarter of 2022. Prabhu Ram, Head of Industry Intelligence Group at CMR, told IANS (via Business Standard) that the “Make in India” initiative greatly contributed to the impressive numbers. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 also had a major role in boosting Apple’s growth in India.
Apple had first forayed into iPhone production in India back in 2017. Starting with the iPhone SE, the firm expanded operations in the country by manufacturing the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 as well. The iPhone 13 is also manufactured in India, at the Foxconn facility. Although production was marred by issues with working conditions, the plant bounced back and commenced assembling the iPhone 13 this month.
“With its enduring brand appeal, Apple continues to attract premium buyers. This is a break from the past when older-generation iPhone models gained consumer favour through aggressive and attractive price offers”, Ram commented of the iPhone’s growth in India.
The report says that the iPhone 12 displayed the most growth—52 percent in the first quarter of 2022. The iPhone 13 grew by 20 percent and iPhone 11 by 18 percent in India. Moreover, Apple managed an impressive 31 percent growth in the country, with the iPad 9th-Gen (WiFi) contributing to 45 percent of the market share. The outlet added that the company could record a 5.2 per cent market share in India this year.
