Installing a water purifier at home has become a necessity to prevent health issues. But how many of us really spend time thinking which water purifier to buy? There are various water purification technologies available today, including gravity-based, ultra filtration and reverse osmosis (RO). However, the most commonly used in India are RO water purifiers that use a multi-stage filtration process to purify water. If taken good care of, the RO water purifier can last for a good 8 – 10 years. Here are some tips on how to maintain your water purifier for clean and safe drinking water.
Regular Filter Change

Did you know that the filters need to be changed periodically, as the contaminants from water begin to clog the filters. If you don’t regularly get the filters changed, it can affect the quality of water, as the impurities are transferred to the water you drink.
Sediment filter
A sediment filter acts as a sieve to remove impurities from the water. RO water purifiers need multiple filters to remove these impurities and one of the filters used is the sediment filter, which we recommend you change once every year. You can replace this filter sooner if you notice the water flow is slowing down or the water colour is slightly darker. Maintaining this filter helps reduce sediment and protects the RO membranes from dirt.
Carbon Filter
Water from the sediment filter is passed through the carbon filter (also known as activated carbon filter), which removes chlorine and other contaminants. We recommend you change the carbon filter once a year too, so that it doesn’t affect the performance of the RO membrane. Carbon filter filters out any kind of odour and unpleasant taste from the water.
RO Membrane
This is the most important part of any RO water purifier. This water purification technology is effective in reducing lead, arsenic, copper, nitrates and nitrites, chromium, selenium, fluoride, radium, barium, cadmium, cyst (cryptosporidium), and total dissolved solids (TDS) from the water. For optimal performance, ensure you replace the RO membrane once a year or once in two years, depending on the consumption of water at home.
Preventive Maintenance
To avoid any problem with the RO water purifier, ensure that you have it covered with the Onsitego Comprehensive Annual Maintenance Contract, so that you get help from a professional when required. Onsitego also offers 2 scheduled maintenance checks a year within the plan period, which includes cleaning the tubes and the water purifier, removing filter impurities, testing the water hardness and ensuring it functions smoothly.
