MediaTek has introduced its first mmWave 5G supported Dimensity 1050 chipset for future smartphones. Currently, the mmWave technology is limited to markets such as the US, Japan, and Taiwan, but is estimated to expand in other regions at a rapid pace by 2026. MediaTek wants to cash in on the opportunity and aims to challenge the upper mid-range mobile processor, Snapdragon 778G/Snapdragon 778G+ by Qualcomm, which also support mmWave technologies.

It is based on the Dimensity 1100 and brings improvements in the connectivity department with the addition of mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G support. MediaTek says its capability to switch between network bands allows it to deliver 53 percent faster speeds.
The CPU core configuration is similar to the Dimensity 1100 and the Dimensity 8100 SoCs. The Dimensity 1050 chipset comes with four ARM Cortex A78 cores clocked at 2.5GHz, which is a bit slower when compared to the clock speeds of the Dimensity 1100 and the Dimensity 8100. The four efficiency ARM Cortex A55 cores are clocked at 2.0GHz. However, one major change which puts it in the league of the new Dimensity 8100 is the GPU department. It gets the Mali -G610 GPU from the Dimensity 8100 as opposed to the Mali G77-MC9 of the Dimensity 1100.
The Dimensity 1050 will go against the Snapdragon 778G/ Snapdragon 778G+, and you can expect it to provide a better gaming experience. The Dimensity 8100 was supposed to take on the Snapdragon 778G upper-midrange chip, but MediaTek positioned it as a flagship-level chip. As a result, the smartphones powered by the chipset, such as the OnePlus 10R and the Realme GT Neo 3, seemed overpriced. Don’t get me wrong, the Dimensity 8100 is an excellent performer, which you can check in our Realme GT Neo 3 review. But, let’s hope better sense prevails and they launch the Dimensity 1050 at affordable prices.
The MediaTek 1050 supports LPDDR5 and LPDDR4X RAMs. It can be coupled with UFS 3.1 or UFS 2.1 memory options. In terms of camera, it supports up to 108MP primary camera sensors and packs in dual HDR, three HDR-ISP, MFNR, 3DNR, AINR, Hardware Depth Engine, and Warping Engine camera features. It supports video shooting in 4K resolution at 30fps.
The chipset comes with MediaTek APU 550 AI accelerator, MediaTek Imagiq 760, and MediaTek HyperEngine 5.0. Connectivity features include Sub-6GHz (FR1), mmWave (FR2), dual 5G support, GPS, BeiDou, Glonass, Galileo, QZSS, NavIC, Wi-Fi 6E, and Bluetooth v5.2, among others.
Smartphones powered by the new MediaTek 1050 chipset are expected to launch between July and September in 2022. The handsets may be priced between ₹20,000 and ₹25,000.
