MediaTek has taken the wraps off its latest high-end processor, the MediaTek Kompanio 1380. It is made using TSMC’s 6nm fabrication process and is intended to power ultra-light premium Chromebooks and tablets. Earlier this month, Acer had announced the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 during CES 2022, and it is powered by the MediaTek Kompanio 1380 processor. Now, MediaTek has revealed the specifications of the MediaTek Kompanio 1380 chipset.

Get the latest technology news, reviews, and opinions on tech products right into your inboxThe MediaTek Kompanio 1380 processor has four high-performance Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at 3GHz and four Cortex-A55 power-efficiency CPU cores. Plus, the chipset comes with a five-core ARM Mali-G57 GPU. The SoC has support for 4K 60Hz HDR displays and hardware-accelerated AV1 decoding.

Coming to the memory, the MediaTek Kompanio 1380 has support for 2133MHz LPDDR4X memory. It is compatible with eMMC, UFS, and NVMe storage chips. The chipset also features MediaTek APU 3.0 with 4 TOPS of performance. The processor can drive Full HD+, QHD+, and 4K displays.
For multimedia, the MediaTek Kompanio 1380 has support for H.264, H.265 / HEVC encode, H.264, H.265/ HEVC, VP-9, and AV1 decode, and 7.1 surround sound. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 6/6E, GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, and QZSS.
For now, there’s no word on which brands will use the MediaTek Kompanio 1380 chipset, but the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 appears to be the first Chromebook powered by it, and it will hit store shelves in April 2022.
