The days of mooching off your ex’s Netflix are coming to an end. The company is planning to put the brakes on password sharing between those who don’t live in the same household.
Chengyi Long, director of product innovation at Netflix, said in a blog post that features such as separate profiles and multiple streams appear to have “created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared”. He added that this has affected Netflix’s ability to invest in the latest TV series and films for their members.

For the last year we’ve been working on ways to enable members who share outside their household to do so easily and securely, while also paying a bit more. And over the next few weeks, we’ll launch and test two new features for our members in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru.

Netflix Testing New Features To Curb Password Sharing Outside Households
The popular streaming giant is planning to test the below features for subscribers in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru:
- Add an Extra Member: Standard and Premium plan users will be allowed to add sub accounts for up to two people they don’t live with. They will have their own profile, personalized recommendations, login, and password. These plans will come at a price of 2,380 CLP in Chile, 2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru.
- Transfer Profile to a New Account: Basic, Standard, and Premium plan users can allow people who share their Netflix account to move their profile information either to a new account or an Extra Member sub account. This will keep their viewing history, My List, and personalized recommendations intact.
Long adds that Netflix will be testing these features in the aforementioned countries before rolling them out to other regions. It’s unclear when the streaming service will bring the new feature to India, so enjoy your ex’s Netflix while you can.
