Xiaomi had launched the Redmi Note 8 in India in 2019. When the device was launched, it came with Android 9 Pie out of the box. Later, Xiaomi updated the device to Android 10. Now, the Chinese smartphone maker has started rolling out the Android 11 update to the Redmi Note 8 in India. The Android 11 update was released for the device in China in March 2021. The Android 11 update for Redmi Note 8 Indian units carries firmware version MIUI 12.0.1.0.RCOINXM and the update’s file size is over 2GB.

However, the device appears to be running the October 2021 security patch. The new update brings all the Android 11 features which Xiaomi has baked in MIUI 12. It’s worth noting that this update brings MIUI 12, and not MIUI 12.5. At the time of writing this article, we are not sure if Xiaomi will release the MIUI 12.5 update to the device. Speaking about the other changes, the update brings 1GB Memory Extension (Virtual RAM).
Apart from Android 11 and Virtual RAM, Xiaomi also has improved the system security and stability with the new update. Considering that the Android 11 update is being rolled out to the Redmi Note 8 in stages, the update should take at least a week or two to reach all Redmi Note 8 users in India. You can head over to Settings > About Phone > System Update to check if your device has received the Android 11 update. If you have not received the update yet and know how to flash the ROM, you can download the zip file from here and flash the firmware manually.
Considering that Xiaomi has released two major Android version updates (Android 10 and Android 11) to the Redmi Note 8, we cannot expect the brand to release the Android 12 update. It is possible that Xiaomi will release the MIUI 12.5 update instead of pushing the Android 12.
