Samsung has launched the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic smartwatches at the Galaxy Unpacked August 2021 event alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy Buds 2. The two smartwatches come as successors to the Galaxy Watch 3 that was launched in August last year. The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic bring plenty of new features. However, there are two major changes that they bring over their predecessors. The first major change is that the two smartwatches now run on Wear OS (with One UI Watch 3 design) instead of Tizen. And the second biggest feature is that these smartwatches have the first 5nm chipsets on a Wear OS device. The Galaxy Watch 4 40mm Bluetooth-only variant is the most affordable model on offer and it has been priced at $249.99, whereas, the 40mm Bluetooth + 4G LTE model costs $299.99. As for the 44mm Galaxy Watch 4, its Bluetooth-only variant has been priced at $279.99 and the Bluetooth + 4G LTE version will set you back by $329.99.
Coming to the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, it is available in 42mm and 46mm dials and Bluetooth-only and Bluetooth + 4G LTE models. The 42mm Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Bluetooth-only model comes with a price tag of $349.99, whereas, its Bluetooth + 4G LTE variant costs $399.99. The 46mm Galaxy Watch 4 Classic Bluetooth-only version costs $379.99. The 46mm model isn’t available in Bluetooth + 4G LTE connectivity option, at least at the moment.
The Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are currently available to pre-order in the US and many other regions across the world and these smartwatches will go on sale from 27 August in most countries. As for their availability in India, the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic have been listed on Samsung’s official website for India. However, the brand has not announced when will the two wearables will go on pre-order and sale in the Indian market.

Apart from the design and the size of the dial, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic are almost identical in terms of internals. The Galaxy Watch 4 40mm and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 42mm feature a 1.19-inch AMOLED screen with 396 x 396 pixels resolution, whereas, the Galaxy Watch 4 44mm and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46mm have a 1.36-inch display with 450 x 450 pixels resolution. Displays on all smartwatches have Corning Gorilla Glass DX+ protection.
Powering the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is the Exynos W920 chipset, which is the first 5nm chipset to feature in any non-Apple smartwatch. The chipset has a dedicated core for Always-On Display. Mated to the chipset are 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. As I have mentioned earlier, the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic run the Wear OS 3 that is customized with One UI Watch 3. The smartwatches come loaded with core Google applications, Google Play Store, and Samsung apps. The watches won’t have Google Assistant and Google Pay at launch, though, and will come later with a software update.
Coming to the sensors, the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic have an all-new 3-in-1 sensor (PPG, ECG, and BIA) for tracking heart rate, heart rhythm, and body fat composition. Along with it, you also get an accelerometer, gyroscope sensor, barometer, and SpO2 sensor. Thanks to all these sensors, the two wearables can track more than 100 fitness activities. There is also sleep detection, snoring detection, and continuous blood and oxygen detection while sleeping.
The Galaxy Watch 4 40mm and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 42mm have a 247mAh battery, whereas, the Galaxy Watch 4 42mm and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46mm have a 361mAh battery. The brand says that these smartwatches will offer up to 40 hours of battery backup and can be charged from 0-100% in under two hours. There is also Qi wireless charging on board. Connectivity options include 4G LTE (depending on model), Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi b/g/n, GPS, NFC, and Samsung Pay.
