Samsung recently unveiled the latest foldable smartphone—the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. The latest Fold series smartphone comes with significant improvements over last year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. Samsung, with the Fold 4, has focused more on improving the functionality rather than just upgrading the internal hardware. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is now wider, which should make the outer display more useful. Moreover, the brand has improved the under-the-display camera significantly.
Let us compare Samsung’s latest foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, with its predecessor, the Fold 3, and see what has changed.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Price
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 price starts at $1,799 for the 12GB + 256GB configuration. To those in the dark, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 also had the same price tag for the 12GB + 256GB variant at launch. However, Samsung has decided to increase the foldable’s price in India this time around and as a result, the Fold 4 starts at ₹1,54,999 which is ₹5,000 more than the launch price of the Fold 3. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Design
Samsung has made some changes to the form factor this year and as a result the Z Fold 4 is a bit wider compared to last year’s Z Fold 3. The company has increased the width as well as the height by a few millimeters this time. However, it has managed to make the Z Fold 4 a few grams lighter than its predecessor.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is the first Fold series device to come with IPX8 water-resistant rating, which is certainly a welcome addition.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Display
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 comes with the same 6.2-inch cover display along with an HD+ resolution, 387ppi pixel density, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, the same as its predecessor. However, this time around, Samsung is using a wider 23.1:9 aspect ratio display compared to the 24.5:9 aspect ratio display on the Fold 3. The cover display on the device makes use of Dynamic AMOLED technology that supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.
Samsung has altered the aspect ratio for the main display as well. As a result, the Fold 4 offers a 21.6:18 aspect ratio display compared to the 22.5:18 aspect ratio display on its predecessor. The Fold 4 packs a Dynamic AMOLED display panel with QXGA+ (2,176 × 1,812 pixel) resolution, 374ppi pixel density, 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, and HDR10+ support.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Processor
Samsung is using the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 beings significant improvements in the performance department and is much more efficient compared to the Snapdragon 888, thanks to TSMC’s 4nm process.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 makes use of LPDDR5 RAM and UFS3.1 storage, similar to its predecessor. However, Samsung, for the first time, is now offering a 1TB storage variant of the Fold series handset.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Cameras
Samsung has upgraded the cameras on the Fold 4 and as a result, Samsung’s latest Fold series device offers a 50MP primary camera with OIS. To those unaware, the Fold 3 offers a 12MP primary shooter. Samsung has decreased the resolution of the telephoto lens on its latest foldable as the Fold 4 comes with a 10MP telephoto lens compared to the 12MP telephoto lens on its predecessor. However, the telephoto lens now offers 3x optical zoom and retains OIS support.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 inherits the 12MP ultra-wide-angle rear lens from its predecessor. The selfie camera on the cover display also remains unchanged and so the Fold 4 offers a 10MP front shooter. The main display still features a 4MP under the display camera sensor but the brand claims to have improved it significantly.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3: Battery and Charging
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 packs the same 4,400mAh battery unit with 25W fast charging support, similar to its predecessor. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 supports 15W wireless charging, which is 50 percent higher than last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 3. To those unaware, the Z Fold 3 supports 10W wireless charging. Similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Fold 4 also supports reverse wireless charging, but it is capped at 4.5W.
