We are now in an age where getting the maximum number of lenses and high-resolution sensors makes or break a smartphone. But what people fail to mention is the sensor size. The bigger the sensor, the better results it delivers. On that note, tipster Digital Chat station took to Weibo to share some details about the upcoming Sony IMX800 sensor.
According to the tipster, this new Sony sensor will be 50MP and sized at 1/1.1 inches, barely surpassing Samsung’s JN1 sensor and taking the title of the largest sensor produced yet for a smartphone form factor. This new Sony sensor could debut on the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, considering that the Xiaomi 11 Ultra was the first smartphone to carry the Samsung GN2 last year.

The current Sony IMX766 is a testament to the level of performance Sony’s latest sensors are providing. IMX766 has been the staple for all mid-range and flagship smartphones since last year. That being said, we cannot just rely on the size of the sensor, since several other factors including lens type, lens quality, software optimizations all influence the overall picture quality.
The tipster has not shared any timeline for the launch of this sensor, but we hope to see some kind of announcement from Sony next month.
