Twitter has announced that it is testing a new feature called Twitter Circle. This new function is similar to how Instagram’s Close Friends works. It will come as good news to folks who think that the social networking platform isn’t already an echo chamber of sorts.
Twitter Circle will let you select up to 150 people to join your Circle. This will include both followers and non-followers. When you want to tweet something to your close friends, all you have to do is navigate to the Choose Audience menu. Then select Twitter Circle instead of Everyone.

Close friends can interact with the tweet as they normally would, except they won’t be able to retweet it. Those outside the group will not be able to see it. Moreover, you will be able to edit your Circle even after posting your tweet.

Additionally, members will not be able to see the entire list of people in your Twitter Circle. However, they will be able to view the interaction with the tweet, unless you have a protected account. The company says, “If someone in your Twitter Circle keeps a protected account, only their followers who are also in your Twitter Circle will see their interaction”. Although members will not be able to remove themselves from a Twitter Circle, they can choose to mute it.
Twitter Circles bears some resemblance to the now defunct Google+ circles which let you share posts to a select group of people, making it easier to control your own privacy and security. Instagram also has a similar feature called Close Friends wherein you can limit private stories to a trusted group of users.
The Twitter Circles feature will be available to a limited number of iOS and Android users at first. However, it’s unclear when it will roll out to everyone. If it is available for you, you’ll be able to see an option to create a Circle when you compose a new Tweet. Do note that you can create only one Circle.
