Microsoft has always dissuaded users from downloading Chrome, pushing them to opt for its built-in browser Edge instead. The company appears to have made a U-turn on its pro-Edge policy by rolling out an update which will allow you to change your default browser with a single click.
The new Windows 11 update (KB5011563) is rolling out to everyone. Previously, Windows 11 made away with the button that let users switch default browsers which was available on Windows 10. Microsoft made the switching process complicated by making users run through hoops such as forcing them to change individual file extensions for HTTP, HTTPS, .HTML, and .HTM. Another option was to select a checkbox every time you click a link from outside a browser.

Last year onwards, Microsoft started displaying new prompts on Windows 10 and Windows 11 when users navigate to the Chrome download page. Have a look at some of the messages:
- “Microsoft Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome, with the added trust of Microsoft.”
- “That browser is so 2008! Do you know what’s new? Microsoft Edge.”
- “‘I hate saving money,’ said no one ever. Microsoft Edge is the best browser for online shopping.”
Additionally, the company doubled down on its efforts by making it more difficult to switch default browsers in Windows 11.
Thankfully, the latest Windows 11 update makes the entire process much simpler to change your default browser. All you have to do is to navigate to the default apps section, then search for the browser you want as default and select it. No more hassle of manually changing individual file extensions.
Windows 11 has been getting regular updates since its launch. Recently, the company announced two new apps—Microsoft Family and the Clipchamp video editor. It also started rolling out an Amazon Appstore preview for American users.
