Last month, the YouTube Music app gained a multi-select feature in list views which let users take bulk actions on files in their library. Now, the platform is getting a visual overhaul when it comes to its media controls.
Android 13 brought with it redesigned media controls, and YouTube Music is also getting a similar treatment, in line with the new style. 9to5Google reports that YouTube Music 5.16 gets updated controls, such as a play action button inside a circle, along with a transition animation. Moreover, the app gets a rounded square pause button at the right-hand side. Additionally, the progress bar is wavy, with back/forward buttons on either side, along with repeat and shuffle on the right edge. Previously, these controls were crammed at the bottom of the player, which made it difficult to access the functions.

With this update, YouTube Music works well with the new media player. However, the YouTube app is yet to receive the functionality for background audio streaming. While Google Podcasts and Chrome already have these features, Spotify still lacks an Android 13 refresh. The report speculates that the app could get a minor cosmetic change before the Android 13 update arrives on Pixel devices in the next few weeks.
The latest YouTube Music version 5.16 is rolling out in phases. So, you can expect the changes to arrive on your device by the end of this week.
