YouTube has announced that it will soon launch a new player for Shorts. The new Shorts design will reportedly be optimized for the big screens to provide users an improved viewing experience. For the unaware, YouTube Shorts follow a vertical format similar to Instagram Reels. Users have no choice but to watch a vertical video in landscape mode on big screens. Hence, the new design for Shorts player on YouTube.

The background theming of the video will be based on the video’s main colour. On the right side of the clip, you will see the video title, details about audio, creator name, and buttons to thumbs up/down, as well as an overflow menu.

Besides, we can expect the video sharing platform to roll out some additional features in the future. It recently tested comments, navigation rail, as well as related tags on the left. YouTube notes,
The customized Shorts experience delivers the best of both worlds: a clean design while making the most of the wide screen’s additional space.
That being said, the platform also tested various designs including a “Jukebox” style where multiple Shorts would appear on the screen. However, the design was later rejected, as it defeats the very purpose of Shorts, which features one video at a time.
Speaking of new controls, YouTube Shorts do not support the autoplay feature. You have to use your remote’s up and down buttons to go to the next video. To launch the YouTube Shorts player on TVs, look for a carousel on the homepage or go to a Creator’s channel and find the “Shorts” tab. The new YouTube Shorts design will be released over the coming weeks for TV models 2019 and later, and newer game consoles.
