Telecom carriers in India—Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vi—have been doing 5G trials in India over the past few months. Airtel and Jio are way ahead in the competition as the telcos are now testing 5G speeds and quality in different cities across India. In a recent development, Airtel has announced that it has conducted 5G trials in India’s rural locations (Bhaipur Bramanan village on the outskirts of Delhi-NCR). The company conducted 5G trials in partnership with Ericsson.
Previously, Airtel had conducted 5G trials in Delhi and Gurgaon. The telco had also tested 5G network speeds in Mumbai in July 2021, where it had managed to achieve a download speed of over 1Gbps.
Airtel 5G Trials In Rural India Gets 200Mbps Download Speeds
In a recent trial conducted by Airtel in rural areas of the Bramanan village, the company claims to have achieved a speed of 200Mbps. Airtel used Ericsson’s 3GPP-compliant 5G radio to carry out the 5G network trial in this area. The 200Mbps throughput was achieved on the 3GPP-compliant 5G FWA device located at a distance of more than 10km from the test site. As part of the testing, a commercially available 3GPP-based 5G smartphone was connected to the 5G test network, which delivered more than 100Mbps speeds beyond a 10km range.

Randeep Singh Sekhon, CTO, Airtel, said
Having demonstrated India’s first 5G network and also the first 5G cloud gaming experience, Airtel is proud to have also conducted the nation’s first 5G trial in a rural setting. 5G will be a transformational technology when it comes to delivering broadband coverage to the last mile through use cases like Fixed Wireless Access and contribute to a more inclusive digital economy. Airtel will continue to be at the forefront of 5G technology and bring more India-relevant use cases through partnerships such as the one with Ericsson.
