Apple had announced the Self Service Repair Program last year, and it is finally available to customers in the US. The program will roll out to Europe later this year, and will later make its way to more countries.
As part of the Self Service Repair Program, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone SE 3 users will be able to fix the display, battery, and camera by themselves. Apple’s online store promises to provide more than 200 parts and tools to aid repair. The firm will expand its program to include manuals, parts, and tools which will help users service their own Mac computers with Apple silicon later this year.
Self Service Repair Program: How It Works
To get started with the Self Service Repair Program, you will have to first have a look at the product’s repair manual. Once you determine what parts and tools you need for the repair, you can head over to the Apple Self Service Repair Store to order the necessary items. Then, follow the instructions on the manual to fix your product. You can check out the detailed process here.
Pricing Of Apple Repair Parts
The iPhone maker says, “Similar to repairs done by Apple, Apple Authorized Service Providers, and Independent Repair Providers, you will be able to return used or damaged parts replaced during your repair to Apple so that they can be refurbished or recycled responsibly”. It adds that you could earn credit when you return a replaced part from certain repair types.
Customers who don’t have professional repair tools will be able to purchase rental kits for $49. It can be used for a week and will ship for free. The price of parts will depend on the type of device. Apple has listed the iPhone 13 Pro display repair bundle for $269 and a battery bundle for $71. To compare, an iPhone 13 screen replacement service costs $279 and an iPhone battery can be serviced by Apple for only $69.
It appears that it might just be more convenient to get your device serviced by Apple, that too at similar price points. Perhaps Apple is simply trying to assuage the likes of Louis Rossmann who have been clamouring for right to repair. Time will tell if the Self Service Repair Program will actually help Apple device owners.
