Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will be launching its 4G services in India by 2024. Meanwhile the country’s private telecom companies are already conducting 5G trials, leaving BSNL in the dust. Before BSNL rolls out its 4G services, here’s how you can verify if your current BSNL SIM is 4G compatible.
How To Check If Your BSNL SIM Supports 4G
As seen in the above image, shared by 91mobiles, a poster for BSNL Kerala shows how you can check if your BSNL SIM supports 4G. To check for 4G compatibility, you will have to first dial the number 9497979797. You will then receive an SMS intimating you about your BSNL SIM’s 4G readiness. In case your current SIM does not support 4G, you can head to a BSNL customer service centre or retail shop to receive a free upgrade to a 4G SIM.
As mentioned earlier, this service is currently available in the following cities in Kerala—Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Kannur. It’s unclear whether the verification process works in other states as well.

Recently, TCS Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Director N Ganapathy Subramaniam had announced that the company has teamed up with BSNL to deploy 4G services. Subramaniam stated, “We are pleased that the indigenous telecom stack is integrated in BSNL’s live network through this PoC. Within the timelines of PoC, the ecosystem of partners in India have been able to deliver advanced features like 40W radios.”
The TCS COO said that multiple rounds of testing have been concluded, including integration to BSNL’s existing networks. TCS and BSNL have been working together to gauge the overall scope of the project. Subramaniam added that both companies are eager to launch 4G services as soon as possible. However, the release timeline will depend on the availability of components and chips. The TCS COO believes the 4G launch will happen sometime between 18 and 24 months.
