Apple recently launched the iPhone 13 series that consists of four smartphones: iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Although the Cupertino-based tech giant is yet to ship new iPhones to the customers who had pre-ordered, we have already started seeing rumours regarding next-generation iPhones. Renowned industry analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, has shed some light as to what we can expect from the iPhone 14 series. The analyst believes that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will finally get rid of the display notch. The punch-hole is expected to replace the ugly notch. However, a punch-hole design isn’t exactly new. Samsung started using it three years ago with the Galaxy S10 series.

Additionally, he predicts that the upcoming iPhone will feature a 6.1-inch display. This newer variant could be the vanilla iPhone 14. As mentioned above, Kuo has also mentioned that two high-end iPhones will feature a punch-hole display, replacing the existing notch design. The iPhone 14 Pro Max model is expected to sport a 6.7-inch display, similar to that of the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Coming to the camera specifications, Kuo believes that the iPhone 14 series will feature a 48MP wide-angle camera at the rear. Apple might make also use a 4-in-1 pixel binning feature to merge information from four pixels to one pixel. It means that 48MP images will finally be converted to 12MP still images that have more details and a wider dynamic range.
Previously, Kuo had stated that the upcoming iPhones will feature under-display Touch ID fingerprint readers. However, in recently released notes, he has taken back this claim. Kuo mentions that Apple has delayed the launch of newer iPhone models with under-display Touch ID to the second half of 2023. This is possibly due to “lower than expected development progress.”
We can expect the next year’s iPhone 14 series to feature a punch-hole display, 48MP main camera, and Face ID or side-mounted fingerprint reader. Also, a new iPhone SE model is also expected next year, and it could feature support for 5G networks. Last but not least, the use of an under-display Touch ID fingerprint reader is expected in the iPhones releasing in 2024.
