LG may have lost the largest LCD manufacturer tag, but it is still undefeated in the OLED TV panel space. No other company churns out big sized OLED TV panels as much as the South Korean giant does. It is also the front runner when it comes to TV display tech innovation. In a view to providing improved OLED displays for TVs in 2022, LG has introduced its new generation of display technology advertised as ‘OLED EX’. The company doesn’t shy away when it comes to boasting of its expertise in OLED tech as the EX stands for ‘evolution’ and ‘experience’. The company states that the OLED EX tech will boost brightness levels by 30 percent, improve picture colour accuracy, and help to reduce bezels.

LG OLED EX Features
What makes the OLED EX tech interesting, on paper at least, are the two major changes that could address the major chink in the shining armour of OLED panels, and that’s the average brightness levels. Firstly, LG has refined the organic material used in OLED by using deuterium. Secondly, the company has employed algorithmic image processing. The AI (Artificial Intelligence) analyses your content to precisely control the display’s energy input. This allows for improved details, vibrant colours, and enhanced brightness levels.
Currently, OLED panels provide about 600 nits of brightness whereas mini LEDs offer almost double the brightness. This tech will hopefully reduce the gap between the brightness levels of OLED and mini LEDs. That’s not all, the updated panel designs are 30 percent less thick and will help to reduce the bezel size from 6mm to 4mm on bigger 65-inch OLED displays.
“With our new OLED EX technology, we aim to provide even more innovative, high-end customer experiences through the evolution of our OLED technology, algorithms and designs,” said LG Display’s Dr. Chang-Ho Oh.
LG OLED EX TV Availability
LG Display will implement its latest OLED EX technology at its OLED production plants in Paju, South Korea, and in Guangzhou, China, starting from Q2 2022. LG is supplying its OLED panels to major TV makers like Panasonic, Philips, Sony etc. Recent news suggests that Samsung would be once again stepping into the OLED TV business but would be sourcing the panels from LG. Expect these manufacturers to launch new televisions with LG’s OLED EX tech from Q2 2022 onwards.
