Google announced the latest iteration of its mobile operating system—Android 12—in October 2021. With Android 12, Google introduced a Material You design that brings wallpaper-inspired colours across the operating system. To those unaware, Android 12 extracts colours from the home screen wallpaper and creates system-wide accent colours. However, it is up to Android OEMs to implement it in their proprietary Android skins. OPPO has taken cues from Material You and implemented the feature in ColorOS 12. The brand even offers additional colour customisations. Sounds interesting, right? Take a look at the screen recording embedded below to see it in action.
At first glance, OPPO’s implementation might seem like the right way to do the system-wide theming as it suggests various combinations of accent colours under the presets: Default, Trendy, Classy, and more. Also, for those who embrace customisations, the custom option should come in handy. The custom option lets users choose four different accent colours from the wallpaper. However, there is a problem. These accent colours don’t get applied to the Google Apps such as Gmail, Google Play Store, Google Maps, and more.
To those unaware, Google’s Material You implementation works even with Google Apps, and these apps adapt to wallpaper-based accent colours. As pointed out by users on social media, OPPO’s version of Material You doesn’t work with Google apps, at least as of now. We can only hope the company finds a way to extend the current implementation to Google’s apps as well with the coming updates.
OPPO’s ColorOS 12 update comes with Inclusive UI, new icons, customisable Always-On Display, PC Connect, Smart Translate, Anti-Peeping Notifications, Instant Icon Prompts, improved battery optimisations, Omoji, and more. OnePlus has already announced a deeper integration with OPPO and the company is all set to merge OxygenOS and ColorOS codebases with Android 12.
