The latest news regarding the OPPO’s and OnePlus’ unification is pretty much what fans dreaded for months. As per the latest post from Weibo‘s account of ColorOS (login required), the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will soon ditch OxygenOS in favour of ColorOS. Following a ColorOS 12 Closed Beta update, the new software is now available to the general public in China. Along with the flagship OnePlus phones, OPPO Find X3 and Find X3 Pro users can also sign up to take the ColorOS 12 for a spin.

For starters, OPPO has doubled down on the ‘Omoji’ feature, which is clearly inspired by Apple’s Animoji. The ‘Smart Sidebar’ feature has been updated with more features. It offers contextual suggestions in addition to app shortcuts. Moving onto utility, the new ‘Cross-Screen Interconnection’ feature enables users to seamlessly share files between their phone and Windows OS-based computers. Apart from cosmetic changes and new features, the new unified OS is a culmination of OxygenOS and ColorOS codebase. For custom ROM enthusiasts, the company is going to retain the unlocked bootloader support.
OnePlus Users Aren’t Happy About ColorOS 12 Replacing OxygenOS
While users are usually happy to receive a new software update, OnePlus customers aren’t ecstatic about the latest announcement. Understandably so, because OnePlus’ Oxygen OS is one of the best Android customisations on the market, but you can’t say the same about OPPO’s ColorOS, at least the previous versions of it.
To make the matters worse, OnePlus has been flip-flopping on its stance surrounding the subject. Initially, OnePlus, Co-Founder Peter Lau had promised that “OxygenOS will remain the operating system for global OnePlus devices outside of the China market.” However, in just a few months, Peter Lau took a complete U-turn to state that “after careful consideration, we have decided to integrate the OxygenOS and ColorOS teams to plan the future software experience together.“
