“There is no cooling” or “My AC is blowing out hot air”
These are two of the most common air conditioner complaints from people, especially during summers. No proper cooling does not mean it’s time to buy a new AC. This issue could possibly arise due to one of the below listed reasons…
Reasons why your air conditioner is not cooling

To keep your air conditioner in a good working condition, it’s important that you switch on the AC for at least 15 minutes twice a week.
One mistake most of us make is, we use the AC only during summers. When the unit is not in use for months at a stretch, it begins to show signs of failure like lack of cooling, gas leakage, etc.
It’s also important that you get a dry cleaning service done once every 3 months. Most brands offer the AMC (annual maintenance contract) service on air conditioners, which can be availed in the manufacturer’s warranty period. This helps in increasing the life and performance of the AC.
AMC includes dry servicing for air conditioners like: blower cleaning of the entire unit, washing of dust filters and cleaning of indoor and outdoor units with blower and brush.
Clogged Air Filter
The most common cause of window air conditioners not blowing cold air is a lack of adequate air flow. This will result in little or no cool air being circulated into the room. The air filter is normally located behind the front grille which may have a side access opening.
Cleaning dirty filters is no rocket science but how many of us really get it cleaned from a professional?
This is another possible reason why the AC blows out hot air.
Air filters trap dust and debris that is pulled into the ducts and if they’re not frequently cleaned, they remain clogged and affect the cooling process. In fact, the name air filter itself explains that it protects the AC from dust in the air.
By getting the filter cleaned once every 2-3 months, you can make it easy for the AC to keep the room cool.
If you think the filter is too clogged and cannot be cleaned, we recommend you buy a new filter. An air filter costs around Rs 500.
Ice Formation on the Coils
If the air conditioner is not maintained with proper dry and wet servicing twice a year or if it’s not in use, the level of coolant in the AC can drop to less than the required amount. Once the coolant drops, the temperature of the cooling coil drops as well.
Due to this the moisture in the room condenses on the coil and that leads to ice formation on the coils.
This is another reason for lack of cooling. If you notice a constant bubbling noise and some ice formation on the outside unit, the cooling issue could be due to this reason.
Gas leakage
This is again a frequent problem with air conditioners and once there’s gas leakage, this issue arises every few months in spite of gas charging, which affects the cooling process.
This is a more common problem for people located around coastal regions or anywhere close to sewage, where air pollution is high.
Due to this, the copper and aluminium metals that are used to seal the AC gas get corroded and small holes are created in the metals from which the gas leaks.
Suggestion: In case you have to change the coils, we suggest you opt for copper coils, as they’re long lasting as compared to aluminium.
In case of a damage in the copper coil, it is also easy and economical to repair it, unlike aluminium coils.
Compressor Issue
This is the most important part of an air conditioner.
A compressor takes care of the flow of gas between the evaporator and the condenser. Which is why if the condenser is damaged, the AC stops blowing cool air.
AC compressors usually comes with 5 years of brand warranty, post which if you regularly face cooling issues, its best to get the compressor replaced. A compressor costs anywhere between Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000, depending on the brand.
To ensure a long life for your AC and to keep it running efficiently, it’s important that you regularly get it checked and serviced from a professional, depending on your usage. If not regularly serviced, your AC may not just stop cooling but also consume more electricity, which will shoot up your electricity bills.
You can consider buying the Onsitego Comprehensive AMC plan and experience hassle-free service! The plan offers up to two years of repair and maintenance support, including two preventive maintenance visits a year, unlimited repairs (including the cost for labour, service, and transport), free gas charging (if required), and the cost of spare parts.
