To compare, the screenshot also showcased that Jio’s 4G network reached a download speed of 46.82 Mbps and an upload speed of 25.31 Mbps. Jitter was 6ms and latency was 23ms. Basically, the 5G download speed is nearly 9 times faster than its own 4G network. The upload speed shows even more improvement, with the upload speed being 16 times faster than Jio’s 4G network.
The Reality
However, don’t expect such massive speeds from 5G when it eventually rolls out to the public by 2023. As the image originates from a testing program, actual speed may differ, depending on various factors such as the 5G device you’re using, number of users, and network infrastructure. In this instance, 5G testing was done on Mumbai servers. To put the network speeds into perspective, back in 2016, Jio achieved a speed of 135 Mbps in the testing phase, according to TelecomTalk. This tapered down to a mere 25-30 Mbps when it actually rolled out to the public.
A month back, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had announced that commercial 5G services will come to thirteen cities in India in 2022. Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi, Gurugram, Ahmadabad, Chennai, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Jamnagar, and Gandhi Nagar are slated to receive 5G services this year. Furthermore, the Government of India revealed that work on its Indigenous 5G testbed project, which began way back in 2018, is almost complete. It was reported that major telecom services such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea have already set up their own trial sites in the aforementioned cities.
