According to latest reports, Toyota and Suzuki are developing an EV exclusively for the Indian market. The Toyota-Suzuki alliance could result in an EV with considerable part sharing and joint development to control costs. The report suggests that the project is in progress and may soon move on to the prototyping phase. Since the Japanese partners originally announced their joint venture in 2016 and then reached financial agreements in 2019, this is one of the significant projects the two have jointly worked on.

The two automakers are already collaborating on rebadging vehicles from each other’s lineup and developing small SUVs specifically for the Indian market. This EV report was first published as a result of a leak on the TeamBHP forum, which claimed that component engineering was already well under way and making significant progress. The companies might begin putting the car prototypes through testing as early as next year.

It is too early to make many comments about the new project, but the new EV may have a crossover body shape. Suzuki also appears to have given the undertaking the codename YY8. Uncertainty exists over the powertrain’s specifications, platform, mechanical components, design, and features. However, Suzuki might introduce the EV first, followed by Toyota with some styling changes. As for the pricing, the EV with Maruti branding will be on the cheaper side compared to the premium that Toyota will charge at a later stage.
