Fast Charging technology has made giant strides over the past few years. However, smartphone batteries have more or less remained the same. Xiaomi has announced its new High-Silicon Lithium battery technology on Weibo, which promises to pack more capacity for the same volume.
Its post on Weibo claims that its upcoming High-Silicon battery tech features more silicon content on the negative electrodes, three times more than that of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, Xiaomi, with its new packing technology, is reportedly able to shrink the control circuits. This in turn, will result in 10 percent more capacity for the same battery volume.

It also features a “Fuel Gauge” chip, which promises to improve the life span of the cells by monitoring overnight charging. Li-Ion batteries are averse to heat, and Xiaomi has allegedly tried to control its temperature by using sensors. In a bid to save space, the PCM (Protection Circuit Module) doesn’t lay flat anymore. The images shared by Xiaomi showcase the small size difference compared to existing lithium-ion batteries.
An increase of capacity by 10 percent may seem insignificant, so let’s put the change into perspective. Xiaomi claims that the 10 percent increase could translate to an extra 100 minutes to your phone’s battery life.
However, don’t expect to see this tech on the Xiaomi 12 series just yet. The company has said that it will begin mass-production of the new batteries in the second half of next year. This could indicate that next year’s Xiaomi flagship line-up could feature the new battery technology.
